I had a moment to register the smell of motel shampoo, before I slipped back into sleep.

When I woke up again, it was light outside, and Renata was still asleep. She was probably as out of it as I was. I propped myself up, and looked past her at the clock on the nightstand, which showed it was almost nine. We had gotten back from Walmart just before noon, and my original plan was for us to grab something to eat and then come back and rest. Instead I slept for almost an entire twenty-four hours.

I was feeling pretty refreshed, but grimy. I headed to the shower, getting out of bed as quietly as I could to keep from waking up Renata. It was early enough that not many people were awake in the motel, yet, which meant lots of hot water. After what seemed like a lifetime of five minute showers when on base, no showers when on deployment, and sponge baths when in the hospital; standing under the spray of hot water felt luxurious.
